At least 2GB is the short answer. Some systems were sold with only 1GB of memory when Vista first hit the shelves. That is barely enough to run Vista let alone your Anti-virus/ Anti-Spyware, on-board video, and all your applications. If your new system is running slow you probably need more RAM. The most common version of Vista is a 32 bit version. That version will support up to 4GB of RAM.
The following table specifies the limits on physical memory for Windows Vista.
32-bit 64-bit
Windows Vista Ultimate 4 GB 128 GB
Windows Vista Enterprise 4 GB 128 GB
Windows Vista Business 4 GB 128 GB
Windows Vista Home Premium 4 GB 16 GB
Windows Vista Home Basic 4 GB 8 GB
Windows Vista Starter 4 GB Not applicable
